Alpinia zerumbet variegata ’Variegated Shell Ginger'

A striking tropical perennial prized for its large, arching leaves boldly striped in green, cream, and golden yellow. Native to East Asia, it grows from thick underground rhizomes and develops into lush, upright clumps with a dramatic tropical appearance. Mature plants may produce fragrant, drooping clusters of waxy white and pale pink flowers with brilliant yellow and red markings. The unusual flower buds resemble small seashells, which inspired the common name Shell Ginger. Interestingly, the species has a long history of traditional use in parts of East Asia, particularly Okinawa, where its aromatic leaves have been used to wrap foods and prepare herbal tea. Its spectacular variegated foliage makes it an outstanding choice for tropical gardens, patios, large containers, or bright indoor spaces.

🌞 Light

Provide bright, indirect light or partial sun. Several hours of gentle morning sunlight encourages vigorous growth and vibrant variegation. Protect the foliage from intense afternoon sunlight in hot climates, which can scorch the lighter portions of the leaves.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly when the upper inch of soil begins to dry. Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist during active growth while allowing excess water to drain freely. Avoid prolonged drought and constantly saturated soil.

Use a rich, fertile, well-draining potting mixture with plenty of organic matter. A quality potting soil amended with perlite and fine orchid bark provides a good balance of moisture retention, drainage, and airflow.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce fertilizing during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

🪴 Repotting

Repot during spring when the roots and rhizomes begin crowding the container. Choose a pot one size larger with adequate drainage. Large, established plants can also be divided at the rhizomes during repotting.
