Corallocarpus welwitschii

A rare African caudiciform prized for its swollen, sculptural base and fast growing climbing vines. During its active season, the caudex produces slender stems covered in deeply lobed green leaves. Small yellow flowers may eventually develop into striking orange/red fruit.

Native to seasonally dry regions of Central and Southern Africa, this unusual member of the cucumber family naturally enters dormancy and may lose its vines entirely. The exposed caudex becomes increasingly textured and impressive with age.

☀️ Light

Bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Protect the exposed caudex from intense afternoon sun, which can cause scorching.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry almost completely before watering again. Reduce watering when the foliage begins to yellow. Keep nearly dry while dormant or leafless.

🌱 Soil

Use an extremely fast-draining cactus or succulent mixture amended generously with pumice, perlite, or coarse sand.

🌡️ Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65°F and 90°F. Protect from frost, especially when grown in a container.

Average household humidity is suitable. Good airflow is important, particularly around the caudex and soil surface.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed lightly once a month during active growth with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer. Do not fertilize while dormant.

Caudiciform, climbing vine. Provide a small trellis or support for the seasonal stems. The vines may die back completely during dormancy and return when growing conditions improve.
