Tillandsia caput medusae ‘Medusa’s Head’
Native to Mexico and Central America, this sculptural air plant features a swollen base and twisting, silvery green leaves that resemble Medusa’s flowing snakes. Fine scales covering the foliage absorb water and nutrients, allowing it to grow without soil. Mature plants develop colorful red to pink flower spikes with tubular purple blooms, followed by offsets that gradually form a clump.
☀️ Light
Provide bright, filtered light with gentle morning sunlight. Protect from intense afternoon sun, especially before the plant has acclimated.
💧 Watering
Thoroughly rinse or briefly dunk once or twice weekly, adjusting to how quickly the plant dries. Shake out excess water and dry upside down with good airflow. Avoid prolonged soaking or allowing water to remain trapped inside the swollen base. The plant should dry completely within a few hours.
🪴 Soil
No soil needed. Mount on wood or place in an open holder that allows airflow around the base. Avoid burying the plant or packing damp moss around it.
🌱 Fertilizing
Feed monthly with an air plant or bromeliad fertilizer at the label’s recommended dilution. Apply during regular watering.
🔄 Repotting
Repotting is unnecessary. Adjust its holder as it grows. Leave offsets attached for a fuller clump, or carefully separate them once they reach about one third of the parent’s size.
🐾 Toxicity
Non-Toxic.
