Kleinia petraea 'Trailing Jade'

Kleinia petraea (formerly Senecio jacobsenii), commonly known as Trailing Jade or Weeping Jade, is a striking succulent with thick, overlapping leaves arranged along long, cascading stems. Its blue-green foliage will develop attractive purple or burgundy tones when exposed to bright light. Mature plants can also produce brilliant orange flowers, creating a dramatic contrast against the foliage. Despite its common name, it is unrelated to the traditional Jade Plant, Crassula ovata.

☀️ Light

Provide very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Morning sun is ideal. Strong light encourages compact growth and richer purple coloring, while insufficient light can produce stretched stems and widely spaced leaves. Acclimate the plant gradually before exposing it to intense outdoor sunlight.

💧 Water

Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water deeply until excess water drains from the container, then wait until the soil is thoroughly dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months. Overwatering and consistently damp soil can quickly cause root rot.

💦 Humidity

Average or low household humidity is ideal. This succulent does not require elevated humidity and benefits from good airflow.

🌡️ Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from frost, cold drafts and prolonged temperatures below 50°F.

🪴 Soil

Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mixture amended with pumice, perlite or coarse sand. A container with an unobstructed drainage hole is essential.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed once a month during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing during winter or whenever the plant is resting.

✂️ Growth Habit

Trailing Jade develops thick stems that can cascade several feet from a hanging basket or elevated planter. Pruning the growing tips encourages branching and a fuller appearance. Stem cuttings can be allowed to callus before being planted in a dry, well-draining succulent mixture.
