Peperomia prostrata 'String of Turtles'

A charming trailing houseplant admired for its tiny, rounded leaves patterned like miniature turtle shells. Native to Ecuador, this tropical epiphyte grows naturally on trees and fallen wood within wet forest environments. Its slender stems gradually spread across the soil before cascading over the edges of pots, making it especially attractive in hanging baskets and elevated planters. Each slightly succulent leaf displays an intricate network of silver-green markings against a darker green background, while the undersides may develop burgundy tones. Mature plants can produce slender, cream-colored flower spikes, although the decorative foliage remains their primary attraction. Its compact size, pet-friendly nature, and unusual patterning make String of Turtles one of the most desirable trailing Peperomia species.

☀️ LIGHT

Provide bright, indirect light to preserve the plant’s compact growth and detailed leaf markings. Gentle morning sunlight is beneficial, but prolonged direct sun can fade or scorch the delicate foliage. Low light is tolerated, although it may produce sparse growth and less pronounced patterns.

💧 WATER

Water when the upper inch of soil begins to feel dry. Allow excess water to drain completely and never leave the pot sitting in water. Its slightly succulent leaves tolerate brief periods of dryness, but prolonged drought can cause shriveling and leaf loss.

🌡️ TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY

Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and protect the plant from temperatures below 55°F. Moderate to high humidity encourages fuller growth and prevents the delicate leaves from drying prematurely. Provide good airflow and avoid leaving the foliage continuously wet.

🌱 SOIL

Use a loose, well-draining mixture containing quality potting soil, perlite, and fine orchid bark. The growing medium should retain a small amount of moisture while allowing oxygen to reach the fine root system. Avoid dense soil that remains wet for extended periods.

🌿 FERTILIZER

Feed once every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or discontinue feeding during fall and winter when growth slows. Excessive fertilizer can damage the fine roots and cause distorted growth.

🪴 REPOTTING

String of Turtles has a small, shallow root system and generally prefers being slightly root-bound. Repot only when necessary, using a shallow container approximately one inch wider than the previous pot. Handle the trailing stems carefully because they detach easily.

Trim long, sparse, or damaged stems to maintain a dense and attractive appearance. Regularly pinching the growing tips can encourage branching and fuller growth near the center of the pot. Healthy trimmings can be saved for propagation.

Propagate using stem cuttings or individual leaves with their petioles attached. Place the cuttings across lightly moist soil and gently press the nodes against the surface. Maintain warm temperatures, bright indirect light, and moderate humidity until roots and new growth develop.
