Native to Southeast Asia, including Peninsular Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, Lecanopteris crustacea is a fascinating fern that naturally grows on tree trunks and sometimes rocks. Its most unusual feature is its thick, swollen rhizome, which contains hollow spaces that provide shelter for ants in the wild. This remarkable adaptation gives it the common name “Ant Fern,” although ants are not necessary for cultivation. Slender, deeply lobed green fronds emerge above the chunky, textured rhizome, creating a striking contrast. Its unusual growth makes it an intriguing specimen for fern enthusiasts, mounted displays, and humid tropical collections.

☀️ Light
Bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Protect from strong direct sunlight, which can scorch the fronds.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to approach dryness before watering again. Avoid prolonged dryness and constantly soggy conditions.

🌱 Soil
Use an airy mix of fine orchid bark, perlite, and a little sphagnum moss. Keep the swollen rhizome above the surface rather than burying it. Can also be mounted with moisture around the roots.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers warm conditions, approximately 65 to 85°F. Protect from frost and cold drafts.

💨 Humidity
Prefers high humidity with gentle air circulation. Avoid stagnant, constantly wet conditions around the rhizome.

🪴 Fertilizer
Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter strength monthly during active growth. Apply to moist roots.
