Cleistocactus winteri 'Golden Rat Tail Cactus'
The Golden Rat Tail is a spectacular trailing cactus native to the mountains of Bolivia. Its long cascading stems are densely covered with soft golden spines that give the plant a fuzzy, glowing appearance. As the stems mature, they can drape dramatically from hanging baskets and elevated planters, creating a waterfall effect of golden growth. During the growing season, mature specimens produce vibrant salmon-orange flowers that emerge along the stems, adding even more visual appeal. Its unusual form, easy care requirements, and impressive flowering habit have made it a favorite among cactus collectors and succulent enthusiasts alike.
🌞 Light
Provide bright light to full sun. Several hours of direct sunlight daily will encourage compact growth and abundant flowering.
💧 Watering
Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly during active growth, then reduce watering significantly during winter dormancy.
🕳️ Soil
Use a fast-draining cactus mix amended with pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
🧪 Fertilizing
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer. Avoid overfertilizing, which can result in weak growth.
🪴 Repotting
Repot every 2 to 3 years or when the plant outgrows its container. Hanging baskets are ideal for showcasing its cascading stems.
