Gerrardanthus macrorhizus is a fascinating caudiciform vine native to South Africa. It develops a massive swollen base, known as a caudex, that can resemble a textured stone or elephant foot over time. From this dramatic base, delicate climbing vines emerge each growing season, producing soft green foliage that contrasts beautifully with the rugged trunk.
Highly sought after by collectors, this plant blends raw desert character with elegant vine growth. As it matures, the caudex becomes increasingly sculptural, making it a true statement piece in any rare plant collection.
Light ☀️
Prefers bright indirect light to gentle direct morning sun. Indoors, place near a bright window. Outdoors, provide filtered light.
Watering 💧
Water thoroughly during active growth, typically spring through early fall, then allow soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy when vines die back.
Soil 🌱
Use a very well draining mix. A cactus or succulent blend with added pumice or perlite works best to protect the caudex from excess moisture.
Fertilizing 🌿
Feed lightly once a month during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer.
Repotting 🪴
Repot every two to three years in spring. Choose a shallow pot with excellent drainage. Keep the caudex partially exposed above the soil line for aesthetic appeal and to reduce rot risk.

I tend to shy away from purchasing the "last available" plant from any seller, especially one from whom I have never purchased. However, this seller's reviews were stellar and I know that this plant would bounce back quickly if it arrived in less than ideal condition. Well, this "last available" plant arrived in superb condition and is already putting on new growth. Packaged with care and grown well. Highly recommend this seller.

The plant arrived completely dry, essentially bare root, but I planted it and now several days later I can report that not a single leaf showed the slightest damage and it is actively growing in its new pot. Apparently, dry is a good way to ship this plant. Certainly looks great. Excited to watch this one get big.
