Codiaeum variegatum 'Croton Pictum'

A colorful tropical shrub celebrated for its thick, glossy leaves and unpredictable patterns of green, yellow and orange. Each leaf can develop its own unique combination of veining, speckles, and colorful patches, giving the plant an ever-changing appearance as its foliage matures. Native to tropical Southeast Asia, northern Australia, and islands of the western Pacific, Codiaeum variegatum has been cultivated for generations and developed into hundreds of ornamental forms. It makes a vibrant indoor specimen and can also be grown outdoors in warm, frost-free climates.

🌞 Light

Provide bright, indirect light or several hours of gentle morning sunlight. Abundant light encourages richer coloration and stronger variegation. Protect the leaves from intense afternoon sunlight, particularly during hot weather.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly when the upper inch of soil feels dry. Keep the soil lightly and evenly moist while allowing excess water to drain completely. Avoid extended drought, saturated soil, and sudden changes in watering because crotons may respond by dropping leaves.

🕳️ Soil

Use a rich, loose, well-draining potting mixture. Indoor potting soil amended with perlite and fine orchid bark provides a helpful balance of moisture retention, drainage, and airflow.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce fertilizing during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

🪴 Repotting

Repot during spring when roots begin circling the container or emerging through the drainage holes. Choose a pot one size larger with adequate drainage. Crotons prefer warm conditions and minimal root disturbance while becoming established.
