Calibanus hookeri
Native to Mexico, Calibanus hookeri is an unusual succulent prized for its rounded, woody caudex and fountain of slender, grasslike leaves. Its deeply textured, corky base stores water, helping it withstand dry conditions while giving mature specimens the appearance of a boulder topped with blue-green foliage. Despite its grassy appearance, it belongs to the asparagus family and is closely related to the ponytail palm. Now botanically classified as Beaucarnea hookeri, it remains widely sold under its familiar Calibanus name. Slow-growing and long-lived, this sculptural plant makes a distinctive specimen for container collections and dry gardens.
☀️ Light
Full sun to bright, filtered light. Acclimate gradually to direct sunlight when moving outdoors. Indoors, provide your brightest window.
💧 Water
Water thoroughly, then allow the growing medium to dry between waterings. Reduce watering during cool weather or when growth slows. Avoid leaving the pot in standing water.
🌱 Soil
Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix amended with pumice or perlite. Keep the exposed caudex above the soil surface and use a pot with drainage holes.
🌡️ Temperature
Thrives in warm conditions and tolerates cooler weather when kept relatively dry. Protect potted specimens from prolonged freezing and cold, wet conditions.
💨 Humidity
Prefers low to moderate humidity with good airflow. Does not require misting.
🪴 Fertilizer
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength during active growth. Pause feeding when growth slows.
