Adenium obesum, commonly known as the Desert Rose, is one of the most admired caudiciform plants in cultivation. Native to arid regions of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, this remarkable species develops a swollen trunk known as a caudex that stores water and gives the plant its sculptural appearance. Mature specimens produce an abundance of vibrant trumpet-shaped flowers in shades of pink, red, white, and bi-colors. Its dramatic form, drought tolerance, and spectacular blooms have made it a favorite among bonsai enthusiasts, succulent collectors, and lovers of unusual plants. With age, the caudex becomes increasingly impressive, transforming each plant into a unique living sculpture.

🌞 Light

Provide as much sunlight as possible. Full sun is ideal, with at least 6 to 8 hours of direct light daily. Bright light encourages compact growth, caudex development, and prolific flowering.

💧 Watering

Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Water deeply during active growth, then reduce watering significantly during cooler months or periods of dormancy.

🕳️ Soil

Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix amended with additional pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent root rot.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Fertilizers formulated for flowering plants can help promote blooming.

🪴 Repotting

Repot every 2 to 3 years during active growth. Many growers gradually raise the caudex above the soil line over time to showcase its unique shape and encourage a more dramatic appearance.
