Native to southern Mexico and Central America, this unusual air plant features a swollen, bulb shaped base and thick, curling leaves covered in silvery fuzz. These tiny scales, called trichomes, absorb water and nutrients through the foliage. In the wild, the hollow spaces between its leaf bases can shelter ants. Mature plants produce colorful pink bracts with purple flowers.

☀️ Light
Provide bright, filtered light with gentle morning sunlight. Acclimate gradually to stronger exposure and protect from intense afternoon sun.

💧 Watering
Thoroughly rinse or briefly dunk the plant once or twice weekly, adjusting to how quickly it dries. Shake out excess water and dry upside down with good airflow. Avoid prolonged soaking or allowing water to collect inside the bulb shaped base. The plant should dry completely within a few hours.

🪴 Soil
No soil needed. Mount on wood or place in an open holder that allows airflow around the entire plant. Keep the base uncovered and avoid enclosed, damp displays.

🌱 Fertilizing
Apply an air plant or bromeliad fertilizer monthly at the label’s recommended dilution. Avoid fertilizing a dehydrated plant.

🔄 Repotting
Repotting is unnecessary. Adjust its mount or holder as it grows. Offsets can remain attached to form a clump or be carefully separated once they reach about one third of the parent’s size.

🐾 Toxicity
Non-Toxic.
