Native to central and southern Mexico, this ornamental shrub or small tree produces divided green foliage and upright clusters of bright yellow flowers, often blooming from fall through winter when many other plants are resting. Its common name, Cascalote, comes from a Nahuatl word meaning “twisted ear,” referring to the shape of its seedpods. Prominent, rose like thorns develop along the trunk and branches, giving mature specimens a distinctive, sculptural appearance.

☀️ Light
Provide full sun for strong growth and abundant flowering. Acclimate gradually if moving from a shaded growing area.

💧 Watering
Water deeply, then allow the upper several inches of soil to dry before watering again. Established plants tolerate drought, while container plants need more regular attention. Avoid constantly wet soil.

🪴 Soil
Use a well draining potting mix amended with pumice or perlite. Outdoors, plant in soil that drains freely rather than remaining soggy.

🌱 Fertilizing
Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced fertilizer at the label’s recommended rate. Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

🔄 Repotting
Repot in spring when roots fill the container. Choose a sturdy pot one size larger with drainage holes, maintaining the original planting depth. Handle carefully around the large thorns.
