Ficus socotrana
A rare and unusual fig species native to the isolated island of Socotra, a place famous for some of the most alien looking plants on Earth. This species develops a thick sculptural trunk with smooth bark and a rugged branching habit that gives it exceptional bonsai and collector appeal. Adapted to harsh dry environments, it combines the resilience of a desert plant with the tropical character figs are known for.
Light 🌞
Provide very bright light to full sun. Strong light encourages compact growth and thicker trunk development.
Watering 💧
Water thoroughly, then allow much of the soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering during cooler months.
Soil 🕳️
Use a very fast draining gritty mix. A blend containing pumice, lava rock, coarse sand, and cactus soil works well.
Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during active growth with a balanced diluted fertilizer. Avoid excessive fertilizing.
Repotting 🪴
Repot during warm active growth when roots outgrow the container. Excellent drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
