A distinctive tropical aroid prized for its unusually thick, swollen petioles and glossy, leathery green foliage. Native to eastern and southern Brazil, it naturally grows as an epiphyte, using trees for support without parasitizing them. Its famously chunky petioles act as water-storage organs, helping the plant withstand periods of reduced moisture and earning it the playful nickname “Fat Boy.” Unlike many familiar climbing Philodendrons, it develops a compact, self-heading, rosette-like growth habit that becomes increasingly substantial with age. Its unusual proportions, glossy foliage, and relatively uncommon availability make it a fascinating addition to tropical plant and aroid collections.

🌞 Light

Provide bright, indirect light for vigorous, compact growth. Moderate indirect light is also tolerated, but avoid prolonged intense direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly when the upper 1 to 2 inches of soil have dried. Allow excess water to drain completely and avoid keeping the roots constantly saturated. Its thick petioles store moisture, making established plants somewhat tolerant of brief periods of dryness.

🕳️ Soil

Use a loose, airy, fast-draining aroid mixture. Indoor potting soil amended with perlite and orchid bark provides a good balance of moisture retention, drainage, and airflow that suits its naturally epiphytic growth habit.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce fertilizing during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

🪴 Repotting

Repot during spring or early summer when the roots begin crowding the container. Choose a pot only one size larger with adequate drainage. Avoid oversized containers and excessive root disturbance.
