Philodendron brandtianum
Philodendron brandtianum, commonly known as the Silver Leaf Philodendron, is a beautiful climbing aroid prized for its heart-shaped, olive-green leaves covered in striking silver markings. Juvenile plants have compact foliage with heavy silver patterning, while mature climbing plants can develop significantly larger and more elongated leaves. Native to tropical South America, this adaptable Philodendron looks beautiful trailing from a hanging planter or climbing a moss pole. Its distinctive metallic foliage and manageable growth habit make it an excellent choice for both new collectors and experienced growers.
☀️ Light
Provide bright, indirect light to encourage vigorous growth and prominent silver coloration. It can tolerate medium light, but growth may become slower and less compact. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
💧 Water
Water thoroughly when the top 1 to 2 inches of soil have dried. Allow excess water to drain completely and avoid keeping the soil constantly saturated. Overwatering may cause yellow leaves and root rot.
🪴 Soil
Use a loose, well-draining aroid mix. A blend containing potting soil or coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, and horticultural charcoal provides a good balance of moisture retention and airflow.
💦 Humidity
Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally above 50%. Higher humidity encourages larger, healthier foliage, although established plants can adapt to average household humidity.
🌡️ Temperature
Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.
🌱 Fertilizer
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or discontinue feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
📏 Growth Habit
Philodendron brandtianum is a climbing and trailing plant. It can be allowed to cascade from a hanging planter, but providing a moss pole or other vertical support will encourage larger, more mature foliage.
