Pachycormus discolor 'Baja Elephant Tree'

A rare caudiciform tree native to the Baja California Peninsula of Mexico. It develops a thick, swollen trunk with smooth, peeling bark in shades of cream, gray, pink, and copper. Its sculptural branches produce soft, feathery green foliage and clusters of small pink or cream-colored flowers during the growing season. The plant naturally sheds its leaves during periods of heat and drought, revealing its beautifully contorted trunk and branching structure. Its dramatic caudex, colorful bark, and natural bonsai-like appearance make it an outstanding specimen for collectors.

☀️ Light

Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. Acclimate young or greenhouse-grown plants gradually to intense sun to prevent scorching. Strong light encourages compact growth and a thicker trunk.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry almost completely before watering again. Pachycormus discolor commonly grows during the cooler months and may become dormant during summer. Reduce watering significantly when the plant loses its leaves, providing only enough moisture to prevent excessive root loss.

Use a very fast-draining mineral-based mix. A combination of cactus soil, pumice, perlite, coarse sand, and fine gravel provides the excellent drainage this species requires.
