A rare caudiciform tree native to Madagascar, prized for its thick swollen trunk, fine branching structure and small glossy leaflets that give it a naturally bonsai like appearance. Sometimes called Elephant Tree or Jabily, this unusual species comes from the dry forests and scrublands of southern Madagascar, where it has adapted to long dry seasons by storing water in its sculptural trunk and roots. Its rugged character, slow growth and ancient looking form make it a favorite among collectors of caudex plants, bonsai specimens and unusual desert adapted trees.

Light 🌞
Provide bright light to full sun. Indoors, place it near your brightest window. Outdoors, it can handle strong light, but acclimate slowly to avoid leaf burn.

Watering 💧
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry well before watering again. Reduce watering during cooler months or when growth slows.

Soil 🕳️
Use a very fast draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, lava rock or perlite. Excellent drainage is essential.

Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize heavily, especially in winter.

Repotting 🪴
Repot only when needed, usually every few years. Choose a pot with drainage and avoid oversizing the container.
