Platycerium bifurcatum is a fascinating epiphytic fern native to Australia and New Guinea, prized for its antler shaped fronds that resemble the horns of a stag. Mounted on a plaque, this plant mimics how it naturally grows on trees, creating a living piece of wall art that brings a tropical, organic feel to any space. Over time, it develops shield fronds at the base that protect the roots and help retain moisture, adding to its unique layered appearance.
Light 🌞
Bright indirect light is ideal. It can tolerate gentle morning sun, but avoid strong direct sun which can dry out the fronds.
Watering 💧
Soak the entire mount in water when it becomes dry, typically once a week. Allow it to fully drain before rehanging.
Soil 🌱
Mounted plants are typically grown on sphagnum moss or a similar medium that holds moisture while allowing airflow to the roots.
Fertilizing 🌿
Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month.
Repotting 🪴
Does not require traditional repotting. Over time it can be remounted onto a larger plaque if it outgrows its base.
