Microsorum thailandicum 'Blue Oil Fern'
One of the most mesmerizing ferns in cultivation, prized for its iridescent blue metallic foliage that seems to shimmer when viewed from different angles. Native to Thailand and neighboring regions of Southeast Asia, this rare epiphytic fern grows naturally on trees and rocky surfaces in humid forests. Unlike most ferns that are valued for delicate fronds, the Blue Oil Fern is treasured for its thick, leathery leaves and striking coloration that resembles a thin coating of blue oil. Its unusual appearance makes it highly sought after by collectors and a standout addition to terrariums, vivariums, and tropical plant collections.
Light 🌞
Provide bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can fade the blue coloration and damage the foliage.
Watering 💧
Keep the soil lightly and consistently moist. Allow the surface of the growing medium to dry slightly between waterings, but do not allow it to become completely dry.
Soil 🕳️
Use a loose, well draining mix rich in organic matter. Orchid bark, sphagnum moss, perlite, and high quality potting media work well. As an epiphyte, it appreciates excellent airflow around the roots.
Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to quarter or half strength. Avoid excessive fertilization, which can damage the roots.
Repotting 🪴
Repot only when necessary, typically every 2 to 3 years. This fern prefers to remain somewhat snug in its container and dislikes frequent disturbance.
Toxicity 🐾
Non Toxic.
