Ipomoea lapidosa

A rare caudiciform morning glory native to Kenya and Tanzania. It develops a thick, tuberous rootstock that stores water and gives mature specimens an impressive sculptural appearance. During active growth, it produces long, woody climbing vines that can reach several feet and should be provided with a trellis or other support. Its heart-shaped green leaves may drop when the plant enters dormancy, sometimes leaving the caudex completely bare. Mature plants produce large, white, sweetly fragrant flowers that open at night. The flowers have long, slender tubes and broad, frilled faces that can approach 3½ inches across. Its combination of a swollen base, vigorous vines, and nocturnal flowers makes it especially desirable among collectors of unusual caudiciform plants.

☀️ Light

Provide bright light with several hours of direct morning or late-afternoon sun. Gradually acclimate the plant before placing it in strong, unfiltered sunlight to prevent scorching.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to dry substantially before watering again. Reduce watering considerably when the leaves begin to yellow or drop. Keep the dormant caudex nearly dry, especially in cool conditions, to prevent rot.

🌱 Soil

Use a very fast-draining cactus or succulent mixture amended with generous amounts of pumice, perlite, or coarse mineral grit. Always grow it in a container with drainage holes.

🌡️ Temperature

Ipomoea lapidosa prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 90°F. Protect it from temperatures below 50°F and keep it completely away from frost.

💦 Humidity

Average household humidity is suitable. Good airflow is especially important during dormancy and in humid growing environments.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed lightly with a diluted, balanced fertilizer approximately once a month during active growth. Do not fertilize while the plant is dormant or without leaves.

✂️ Growth and Maintenance

Provide a trellis or frame for the climbing vines. Vines may be trimmed to control their size without harming the caudex. Repot only when necessary and avoid burying newly exposed portions of the caudex too deeply.
