Hoya sp. ‘Sarawak’

A highly sought-after tropical Hoya known for its unusually large, rounded leaves and striking textured venation. New foliage emerges soft and gradually hardens into thick, substantial leaves that can develop reddish or bronze tones when grown under bright light. This vigorous climbing epiphyte originates from Sarawak on the island of Borneo and produces clusters of attractive, star-shaped flowers when mature. Its oversized foliage and bold tropical appearance make it a standout addition to any Hoya collection.

Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sunlight can encourage stronger growth and attractive sun-stressing, but harsh afternoon sunlight may scorch the leaves.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly when most of the potting mix has dried. Allow excess water to drain completely, and avoid leaving the roots in consistently wet soil. Its thick leaves provide some drought tolerance, but prolonged dryness may slow growth.

🪴 Soil

Use a chunky, fast-draining epiphytic mix. A combination of orchid bark, perlite, coco husk, and a small amount of potting soil or coco coir provides excellent drainage and airflow.

Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally above 50%. Good air circulation is important, particularly in warm and humid growing conditions.

Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F.

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth slows.
