Hoya neocaledonica

Hoya neocaledonica is a rare tropical Hoya species native to New Caledonia, an island group in the southwestern Pacific known for its exceptionally diverse plant life. First formally described in 1902, this uncommon species develops long, flexible vines lined with thick, glossy green leaves. New foliage may emerge with bronze or reddish tones before maturing to green, especially when the plant receives strong light. Mature plants produce rounded clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers with pale cream to yellow petals and contrasting pinkish-red centers. The blooms may also release a pleasant fragrance. Its manageable foliage and climbing growth make it an excellent candidate for a small trellis, hoop, or hanging basket. Although rarely encountered in cultivation, it adapts well to typical indoor Hoya conditions when protected from excessive moisture and cold temperatures.

Provide bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun or filtered late-afternoon sun can encourage stronger growth and flowering, but avoid intense midday sunlight that may scorch the leaves.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly when most of the potting mix has dried. Allow excess water to drain completely, and reduce watering during cooler months when growth slows.

🌱 Soil

Use a chunky, fast-draining mixture containing orchid bark, perlite, coco coir, and a small amount of quality potting soil. Good airflow around the roots is essential.

💦 Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally between 50% and 70%. It can adapt to average household humidity if watering and airflow are properly managed.

🌡️ Temperature

Keep between 65°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from temperatures below 55°F, cold drafts, and sudden temperature changes.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed every three to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce or discontinue feeding during winter.

📏 Growth Habit

A climbing or trailing evergreen vine that can be trained around a trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging container.

✂️ Pruning

Trim overly long or damaged vines as needed. Do not remove old flower spurs, since Hoyas can bloom repeatedly from the same structures.
