Native to tropical regions extending from India and Sri Lanka through southern China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia, Hemionitis arifolia is a compact fern admired for its glossy heart shaped fronds and slender black stems. This unusual species produces two distinct types of fronds. Its sterile fronds are shaped like hearts, while its taller fertile fronds are shaped more like arrowheads and produce spores. It naturally grows on moist rocks, tree bases, and other humid surfaces, making it especially well suited for terrariums and small indoor displays.

🌞 Light

Provide bright indirect light or filtered shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the delicate fronds. A location with stable light and high humidity will encourage healthy growth.

💧 Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but never saturated. Do not allow the plant to dry out completely, as the fronds may quickly curl or become crisp. Avoid allowing the roots to sit in standing water.

🕳️ Soil

Use a rich, moisture retaining mix that also provides good drainage and airflow. A combination of coco coir, fine orchid bark, perlite, and quality potting media works well.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Avoid excessive fertilizing because ferns can be sensitive to mineral buildup.

🪴 Repotting

Repot every 1 to 2 years, or when the plant becomes crowded in its container. Choose a shallow pot only slightly larger than the current container and handle the delicate roots carefully.
