Fockea edulis 'Hottentot Bread'

Fockea edulis, known as Hottentot Bread, is a striking caudex plant prized for its massive, swollen base that can resemble a sculptural stone formation. Native to southern Africa, it stores water in this thick caudex, allowing it to thrive in harsh, dry environments. From the base, it sends out long, twining vines with delicate leaves, creating a dramatic contrast between rugged structure and soft growth. Over time, it can develop into an impressive specimen that becomes a true centerpiece.

Light 🌞

Prefers bright light to some direct sun. Strong light encourages healthy growth and a well developed caudex.

Watering 💧

Water during active growth, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy.

Soil 🌱

Use a very well draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding pumice or perlite helps prevent excess moisture around the caudex.

Fertilizing 🌿

Feed during the growing season once a month with a balanced fertilizer. Do not fertilize during dormancy.
