Pot Size

An extraordinary epiphytic cactus admired for its long, deeply lobed stems that resemble enormous fern fronds. These leafy-looking structures are actually flattened, photosynthetic stems called cladodes. Native to the forests of Chiapas and Tabasco in southeastern Mexico, it naturally grows on trees where its roots receive abundant airflow and filtered light. Mature specimens can produce enormous, fragrant white flowers that open at night, sometimes reaching more than a foot in length. Its cascading growth makes it especially impressive in a hanging basket.

🌞 Light

Provide bright, indirect light or gentle filtered sunlight. A location near an east-facing window is ideal. Protect the stems from intense afternoon sun, which may cause discoloration or scorching.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly when the upper one-third of the potting mixture has dried. Allow excess water to drain completely. This tropical cactus appreciates more consistent moisture than desert cacti while actively growing.

🕳️ Soil

Use a chunky, airy, fast-draining mixture. Combine indoor potting soil with orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir to provide moisture retention and excellent airflow around the roots.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. A bloom-supporting fertilizer can be used periodically on mature plants. Reduce fertilizing during fall and winter.

🪴 Repotting

Repot when the roots fill the container or the potting mixture begins breaking down, commonly every two to three years. Choose a sturdy hanging basket or container one size larger with adequate drainage holes.
