Euphorbia tithymaloides ‘Devil’s Backbone’

An unusual tropical succulent shrub recognized instantly by its distinctive zigzag stems. It was formerly classified as Pedilanthus tithymaloides, a botanical name still widely used by nurseries and plant collectors. The species is native from Florida and Mexico through portions of Central America, the Caribbean, and tropical South America, where it grows primarily in seasonally dry tropical environments. Each leaf emerges from alternating sides of the stem, creating the crooked growth pattern responsible for its Devil’s Backbone and Zigzag Plant common names. Its smooth, oval leaves form an attractive canopy along the upright stems, while mature plants may produce clusters of small flowers surrounded by bright red, slipper-shaped bracts. When grown outdoors in a suitable tropical climate, it can eventually reach 2 to 10 feet tall, although container-grown houseplants usually remain considerably smaller. Its sculptural form, moderate growth rate, and tolerance for occasional dryness make it a fascinating addition to succulent collections and brightly lit interiors.

☀️ LIGHT

Provide bright, indirect light with some gentle morning or late-afternoon sun. A location near an east, south, or west-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light can produce weak, leggy growth, while intense sunlight without proper acclimation may scorch the foliage.

💧 WATER

Water thoroughly when the upper 1 to 2 inches of soil have dried, allowing excess water to drain completely. Although it has succulent stems and tolerates occasional dryness, it should not remain completely dry for extended periods. Reduce watering during winter and never allow the pot to sit in standing water.

🌡️ TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY

Devil’s Backbone prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. Protect it from frost, cold drafts, and temperatures below approximately 50°F. Average household humidity is suitable, although it can also tolerate moderately humid conditions when provided with good airflow.

🌱 SOIL

Use a loose, fast-draining succulent mixture that retains a small amount of moisture without becoming waterlogged. Adding perlite, pumice, or coarse bark will improve drainage and root aeration. Always plant it in a container with a drainage hole.

🌿 FERTILIZER

Feed once every four to six weeks during spring and summer using a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing during winter when growth naturally slows. Excessive fertilizer can produce weak, overly rapid growth.

🪴 REPOTTING

Repot every two to three years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Select a container only slightly larger than the existing pot to prevent the soil from remaining wet for too long. Wear gloves during repotting because damaged stems and roots release an irritating milky latex sap.

✂️ PRUNING

Prune as needed during spring or early summer to control height, encourage branching, or remove damaged stems. Use clean cutting tools and wear gloves and eye protection. Wash tools and hands thoroughly afterward, and do not touch your face while handling the plant.

🌱 PROPAGATION

Propagate using stem cuttings taken during warm weather. Allow the milky sap to stop flowing, rinse the cut end carefully, and let the cutting dry for several days before planting it in lightly moist, fast-draining soil. Keep the cutting warm and in bright, indirect light while roots develop.
