Euphorbia misera, commonly known as Cliff Spurge, is a fascinating succulent shrub native to the coastal deserts and rocky cliffs of Baja California and the far southern edge of California. In habitat it grows in exposed rocky slopes overlooking the ocean, where fog, sun, and salty air shape its compact sculptural form. The plant produces thick branching stems with small seasonal leaves that often drop during dry periods, giving it a distinctive minimalist silhouette. Like many members of the euphorbia family it exudes a milky latex sap and is extremely drought adapted. Its rugged coastal origins and unusual branching structure make it an excellent choice for collectors who appreciate unusual desert plants and California natives.
Light 🌞
Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sun. Outdoors it thrives in full sun. Indoors place it in the brightest window available.
Watering 💧
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry almost completely before watering again. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months.
Soil 🌱
Use a fast draining cactus or succulent mix. A gritty mineral soil with pumice or coarse sand helps prevent excess moisture around the roots.
Fertilizing 🌿
Feed lightly during the growing season with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
Repotting 🪴
Repot every few years as needed when the root system fills the container. Use a pot with excellent drainage.
