A rare caudiciform plant prized for its swollen trunk, irregular branching, and distinctive curled foliage. Native to seasonally dry regions of tropical Africa, it develops a sculptural, miniature tree-like appearance as it matures. Its unusual flattened flowers, known as hypanthodia, resemble small green stars and can eventually launch ripe seeds into nearby pots. This fascinating member of the fig family combines the character of a caudex plant with lush tropical growth, making it an exceptional specimen for collectors.

☀️ Light

Provide bright, indirect light with several hours of gentle morning or late-afternoon sunlight. Adequate light encourages compact growth and a well-developed caudex. Protect it from intense midday sunlight, particularly during extreme heat.

💧 Water

Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the top half of the soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly if the plant drops its leaves or enters dormancy. Avoid keeping the soil consistently wet, which can quickly cause rot.

🪴 Soil

Use a very fast-draining, gritty succulent mix. A combination of cactus soil, pumice, perlite, and coarse sand provides the drainage and root aeration this plant requires.

💦 Humidity

Prefers low to moderate humidity with excellent air circulation. Avoid prolonged exposure to stagnant, excessively humid conditions.

🌡️ Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from frost, cold drafts, and temperatures below 50°F.

🌱 Fertilizer

Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced or low-nitrogen fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize while the plant is dormant or without leaves.

📏 Growth Habit

This plant develops a swollen caudex with upright or branching stems topped by curled green leaves. Growth may be seasonal, and temporary leaf loss can occur during dormancy or environmental changes.
