One of Madagascar’s most unusual and sought-after succulent trees. Native to the island’s arid spiny forests, this remarkable species develops thick upright stems lined with formidable spines and small seasonal leaves. Often compared to an African version of an Ocotillo, its bizarre growth habit and prehistoric appearance make it a favorite among collectors of rare succulents and caudiciform plants. Over time, mature specimens develop impressive trunks and architectural branching, creating a dramatic living sculpture unlike almost anything else in cultivation. Its rarity, drought tolerance, and exotic origin have made it a prized addition to serious plant collections.

🌞 Light

Provide full sun to very bright light. Outdoor specimens thrive in direct sunlight, while indoor plants should be placed in the brightest location available.

💧 Watering

Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months or periods of dormancy.

🕳️ Soil

Use an extremely fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, lava rock, or coarse mineral components. Excellent drainage is essential.

🧪 Fertilizing

Feed lightly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength. Excess fertilizer is unnecessary and may encourage weak growth.

🪴 Repotting

Repot only when necessary, typically every few years. Handle carefully due to the sharp spines. Choose containers with excellent drainage.
