Curio herreanus 'String of Watermelons'

Curio herreanus (formerly Senecio herreanus), more commonly known as String of Watermelons, is a charming trailing succulent with plump, oval leaves resembling miniature striped watermelons. Each leaf features translucent lines that allow sunlight into its interior. Its cascading stems make it an excellent choice for hanging baskets, shelves and elevated planters. Mature plants may also produce small, brush-like white flowers with a pleasantly spicy fragrance.

☀️ Light

Provide bright, indirect light with a few hours of gentle morning sun. Sufficient light encourages compact growth, pronounced leaf markings and richer purple tones. Avoid intense afternoon sunlight, particularly during hot weather, as it may scorch the leaves.

💧 Water

Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water thoroughly until excess water drains from the container, then wait until the soil is fully dry before watering again. The swollen leaves store moisture and may become slightly soft or wrinkled when the plant is thirsty. Reduce watering during winter.

💦 Humidity

Average or low household humidity is ideal. This succulent does not require elevated humidity and benefits from good airflow.

🌡️ Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. Protect the plant from frost, cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F.

🪴 Soil

Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus or succulent mixture amended with pumice, perlite or coarse sand. Always use a container with an unobstructed drainage hole, as consistently wet soil can quickly cause root rot.

🌿 Fertilizer

Feed once a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing during winter or whenever active growth has slowed.

✂️ Growth Habit

String of Watermelons produces slender stems that cascade attractively from hanging containers. The vines can be trimmed to encourage branching and fuller growth. Stem cuttings root readily when laid across or lightly inserted into a well-draining succulent mixture.
