Crassula sarcocaulis ‘Bonsai Crassula’
Native to eastern South Africa and neighboring countries, this miniature succulent shrub naturally develops a woody trunk and branching crown, giving it the appearance of a tiny mature tree. Older stems develop peeling bark, adding character without years of bonsai training. Clusters of small white to pink flowers appear at the branch tips and can carry a fragrance reminiscent of honey or black currant jam.
☀️ Light
Provide bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. Acclimate gradually to stronger exposure. Indoors, choose a sunny window to encourage compact growth.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before watering again. Reduce watering when growth slows, and never leave the pot sitting in water.
🪴 Soil
Use a fast draining cactus and succulent mix amended with pumice or perlite. Avoid dense soil that stays wet around the roots.
🌱 Fertilizing
Feed lightly during active growth with a succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength. Apply about once a month and pause when growth slows.
🔄 Repotting
Repot in spring when roots fill the container. Choose a pot only slightly larger with drainage holes. Its naturally branching habit also makes it suitable for a shallow bonsai container once established.
