Native to the coastal Atacama Desert of northern Chile, Copiapoa cinerea is a remarkable cactus prized for its sculptural shape and pale, waxy appearance. Its rounded stem slowly becomes columnar with age, developing pronounced ribs, contrasting dark spines, and a woolly crown. Mature plants may produce small yellow flowers near the growing tip. In its native habitat, coastal fog known as “camanchaca” provides moisture in an environment where rainfall is exceptionally scarce. Its characteristic silvery coating is a natural protective wax, although cultivated plants may remain greener depending on age and growing conditions. Slow-growing and long-lived, this species is a treasured addition to a cactus collection.

☀️ Light
Bright light with gentle direct sun. Acclimate gradually and protect from intense afternoon sunlight, especially during extreme heat.

💧 Water
Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the growing medium to dry completely. Keep mostly dry during cool winter rest. Avoid watering during extreme heat if growth has stalled.

🌱 Soil
Use a very fast-draining, mineral-rich cactus mix containing pumice, lava rock, or coarse grit. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid moisture-retentive soil.

🌡️ Temperature
Prefers mild to warm conditions with good ventilation. Protect from frost, prolonged cold, and excessive heat in enclosed spaces.

💨 Humidity
Provide good airflow and allow the plant to dry promptly after watering. Does not require misting, despite its association with coastal fog in the wild.

🪴 Fertilizer
Feed lightly with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer at quarter to half strength during active growth. Do not fertilize during winter rest.

⚠️ Toxicity
None toxic
