Cissus quadrangularis
A fascinating succulent vine native to parts of Africa and Asia, instantly recognized by its thick, segmented square stems that give it an almost geometric appearance. Most species of Cissus are tropical jungle vines with thin stems and lush foliage, making this species a very unusual exception within the genus. Instead of soft leafy growth, Cissus quadrangularis evolved thick succulent stems adapted for surviving hot, dry climates. For centuries it has also been used in traditional herbal practices, especially in India where it is known as Hadjod. Its bizarre architectural form and rugged growth habit make it an unforgettable collector plant.
Light 🌞
Provide bright light to full sun for the strongest growth and thickest stems. Indoors, a very sunny window is ideal.
Watering 💧
Allow the soil to dry significantly between waterings. This plant stores moisture in its succulent stems and prefers drier conditions over constantly wet soil.
Soil 🕳️
Use a fast draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, perlite, or coarse sand to prevent soggy roots.
Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength.
Repotting 🪴
Repot only when necessary, typically once the roots outgrow the container. Terracotta pots work especially well for this species.
