Bursera microphylla, commonly called the Elephant Tree, is one of the most distinctive trees of the Sonoran Desert. Native to Baja California, northwestern Mexico, and parts of southern Arizona, this fascinating species is known for its thick swollen trunk that stores water, giving it the appearance of a miniature elephant leg. In habitat it grows among rocky desert slopes where rainfall is scarce, shedding its tiny aromatic leaves during dry periods to conserve moisture. The bark peels in pale gray and reddish tones, revealing a sculptural living form that collectors often train as a natural desert bonsai. With age the trunk becomes dramatically thickened and character rich, making each specimen completely unique.

Light 🌞
Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sun. Outdoors in full sun is ideal. Indoors place near the brightest window available.

Watering 💧
Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry almost completely before watering again. During winter dormancy the plant may drop its leaves and should be watered very sparingly.

Soil 🌱
Use a very fast draining cactus or succulent mix. A gritty blend with pumice, coarse sand, and mineral components works well.

Fertilizing 🌿
Feed lightly during the active growing season in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertilizer.

Repotting 🪴
Repot every few years or when the root system fills the container. Choose a pot with excellent drainage.

Toxicity ☠️
Non toxic
