Bowiea volubilis 'Sea Onion'
One of the most unusual caudex plants you can grow. Native to southern Africa, it forms a large exposed bulb that sends out delicate, twining green stems that look almost like a living sculpture. Despite its airy appearance, it stores water in its bulb, making it quite resilient. In its natural habitat it climbs through surrounding vegetation, creating a wild, tangled display that feels both architectural and organic.
Light 🌞
Prefers bright indirect light. It can tolerate some gentle direct sun, but too much harsh light can stress the plant.
Watering 💧
Water lightly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering significantly when the plant enters dormancy and the vines begin to die back.
Soil 🌱
Use a very well draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding pumice or perlite helps keep the bulb from sitting in moisture.
Fertilizing 🌿
Feed lightly once a month during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer. No feeding is needed during dormancy.
Repotting 🪴
Repot only when necessary, as it prefers to be slightly root bound. Keep the bulb partially exposed above the soil line.
