Boophone haemanthoides

An extraordinary geophytic bulb species from South Africa admired for its massive exposed bulb and elegant fan shaped blue green foliage. Closely related to the famous Boophone disticha, this rarer species develops a beautifully sculptural form that makes it highly prized among collectors of caudiciforms and unusual bulbs. During dormancy the plant retreats into its enormous bulb, allowing it to survive harsh dry conditions in habitat.

Light 🌞
Provide very bright light to full sun. Strong lighting helps maintain compact healthy foliage and proper bulb development.

Watering 💧
Water during active leaf growth, allowing the soil to partially dry between waterings. Greatly reduce watering during dormancy to avoid bulb rot.

Soil 🕳️
Use a very fast draining gritty mix with coarse sand, pumice, lava rock, and cactus soil.

Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer every few weeks.

Repotting 🪴
Repot only when necessary, since these bulbs dislike excessive disturbance. Keep much of the bulb exposed above the soil line.
