Boophone disticha
Boophone disticha is a breathtaking geophyte native to South Africa, known for its massive above soil bulb and perfectly symmetrical fan of leaves. This ancient species grows slowly and can live for decades, producing a dramatic dome of pink to red flower clusters before leaf emergence. Traditionally used in African ethnobotany, it carries a long cultural history, though all parts of the plant are toxic. Its sculptural presence makes it a centerpiece specimen for collectors who appreciate rare caudiciform plants with bold structure and heritage.
🌞 Light
Bright light to full sun. Outdoors it thrives in strong direct sun. Indoors provide the brightest exposure possible, ideally a south facing window.
💧 Watering
Water sparingly during active growth. Allow soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Keep completely dry during dormancy, typically summer when leaves die back.
🌱 Soil
Very fast draining mineral based mix. Cactus or succulent soil amended with extra pumice or perlite works well. Excellent drainage is essential to prevent bulb rot.
🌿 Fertilizing
Feed lightly during active growth with a diluted balanced fertilizer once monthly. Do not fertilize while dormant.
🪴 Repotting
Repot only when necessary. This species prefers to remain undisturbed. Always keep the upper portion of the bulb exposed above the soil line.
