Anthurium watermaliense 'Black Anthurium'
Admired for its dramatic dark purple to nearly black bloom, which is why it is often sold as Black Anthurium. Unlike many velvety or more demanding anthuriums, this species is known for being easy to care for while still offering a bold, tropical look. As it grows, it goes through developmental heterophylly, meaning the leaf shape changes from its juvenile form to a more mature form over time. The plants we offer are currently in their juvenile stage, but they transition into maturity with ease. Native to the wet tropical regions of Costa Rica, Panama, and Colombia, it is a great choice for collectors looking for something rare, exotic, and approachable.
Light 🌞
Bright indirect light is best. It can handle a little gentle morning sun, but harsh afternoon sun can scorch the leaves. A spot near a bright window with filtered light will help it stay full and healthy.
Watering 💧
Water when the top portion of the soil has dried slightly. Keep the mix lightly moist but never soggy. This plant appreciates consistency, especially during active growth.
Soil 🕳️
Use a chunky, airy aroid mix that drains well. A blend with orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil works well and gives the roots the airflow they like.
Fertilizing 🧪
Feed lightly during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer at reduced strength about once a month. Avoid heavy feeding, which can lead to salt buildup.
Repotting 🪴
Repot when the plant becomes root bound or the mix starts to break down. Move up only one pot size at a time and refresh the soil to keep the roots healthy.
