Apoballis acuminatissima ‘Lavallaei’

A stunning tropical plant with beautifully patterned foliage and rich purple undersides. Its elongated leaves feature a silvery green background marked with irregular patches of darker green, creating a camouflage effect. Burgundy stems and leaf backs add another layer of color, especially as new foliage unfolds. Its compact, clumping growth makes it a beautiful choice for tabletops, shelves, and smaller plant displays. Although sometimes sold as Homalomena ‘Purple Sword’, it belongs to the genus Apoballis. Warm temperatures, gentle light, and consistent moisture help keep its colorful foliage looking its best.

☀️ Light

Provide medium to bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves and fade their markings.

💧 Water

Keep the potting mix lightly and evenly moist, allowing the top inch to begin drying before watering again. Water thoroughly and drain excess water completely, avoiding both prolonged dryness and soggy soil.

🌱 Soil

Use a loose, well draining mix containing potting soil, perlite, and fine orchid bark. The mix should retain some moisture while allowing air to reach the roots.

🌡️ Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F. Protect from frost, cold drafts, and prolonged temperatures below 60°F.

Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally around 50% to 70%. Maintain good airflow and avoid placing it directly beside heating or air conditioning vents.
