Alluaudia dumosa
Native to southern Madagascar, this unusual succulent shrub develops slender, cylindrical stems in soft gray green tones. Its mostly leafless branches grow upright before gently arching, creating a sculptural silhouette. A slow growing member of the Didiereaceae family, it can eventually form a substantial shrub and produce small clusters of creamy white flowers on mature plants.
☀️ Light
Provide very bright light with several hours of direct sunlight. Acclimate gradually to stronger sun to prevent scorching.
💧 Watering
Water thoroughly during active growth, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Reduce watering significantly during dormancy, and never leave the pot sitting in water.
🪴 Soil
Use a gritty, fast draining succulent mix amended with pumice or perlite. Avoid dense soil that holds moisture around the roots.
🌱 Fertilizing
Feed lightly once a month during active growth with a succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize during dormancy.
🔄 Repotting
Repot at the beginning of active growth when roots fill the container. Choose a pot only slightly larger with drainage holes, keeping the original planting depth.
