Pot Size

Native to southern Zimbabwe and northern South Africa, this striking caudiciform develops an irregular, swollen base topped with twisting branches and prominent thorns. Small green leaves appear during active growth before dropping during seasonal dormancy, revealing its sculptural framework. A member of the passionflower family, its water storing base becomes increasingly distinctive with age.

☀️ Light
Provide very bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Acclimate gradually to stronger exposure, and protect the caudex from intense afternoon sun.

💧 Watering
Water thoroughly during active, leafy growth, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering sharply as leaves drop, keeping an established dormant plant nearly dry. Never leave the pot sitting in water.

🪴 Soil
Use a gritty, fast draining succulent mix amended generously with pumice or perlite. Avoid heavy soil that retains moisture around the roots and caudex.

🌱 Fertilizing
Feed monthly during active growth with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Do not fertilize while dormant.

🔄 Repotting
Repot at the beginning of active growth when the roots fill the container. Choose a slightly larger pot with drainage holes and maintain the original planting depth. Handle carefully around the sharp thorns.
