Cyphostemma cirrhosum is a rare climbing caudiciform from southern and tropical Africa, including Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. A member of the grape family, it develops a swollen water storing caudex and produces vigorous seasonal vines with soft divided leaves and curling tendrils. Mature plants can develop a caudex approximately twelve inches wide and vines reaching fifteen feet. Small greenish yellow flowers may be followed by decorative red fruit. During dormancy, the vines and foliage may naturally die back before returning with warm weather.

Light 🌞

Provide bright light with several hours of gentle direct sunlight. Acclimate the plant gradually to stronger sun to prevent scorching.

Watering 💧

Water thoroughly during active growth, then allow the soil to become nearly dry before watering again. Reduce watering significantly when the plant becomes dormant and loses its leaves.

Soil 🕳️

Use a very fast draining succulent mix containing pumice, perlite, coarse sand, and a small amount of organic potting soil.

Humidity 💨

Average household humidity is suitable. Good airflow helps prevent rot around the caudex and roots.

Fertilizing 🧪

Feed monthly during active growth with a diluted cactus or balanced fertilizer. Do not fertilize during dormancy.

Repotting 🪴

Repot at the beginning of active growth every two to three years or when rootbound. Use a sturdy container with excellent drainage and handle the swollen caudex carefully.
